MVRDV Files Projects 002-209
creative strategy, art direction

Together with the management, a design line was created for the look and feel of this issue of A+U (Japan). This issue was published at the same time as an issue on MVRDV by Elcroquis (Spain). For Elcroquis, the focus was on the technical aspects of architecture. For A+U, it was up to us how we wanted to approach MVRDV's projects in the issue. We decided on a 'comic book' look, with lots of photographs and sketches of the various processes involved in the creation of the architecture. I made sketches of the projects that A+U's design team could work on. In the meantime, I also built up a digital library of all MVRDV's material.

Cover design for ElCroquis Stacking and Layering MVRDV issue

Winy Maas asked if I wanted to design a book. The original designer had cancelled the assignment. Snag: it had to be ready in a fortnight and the material needed was incomplete (that was an understatement). Together with some people from the research team I was a part of, we had drawn up a plan to set the lines for the required material and texts.

Working with Thomas Widdershoven of Bureau Thonik, we looked at the design for the book so that I could then do the further implementation.

Due to good preparation, we were on schedule, but after a week the news arrived that the text had to be in German as well as English. No pages were added and the translation still had to be done.

With six translators, overnight adventures and two more days in Germany staying with the client for the finishing touches, there was the book.
